State will post bid on purchasing Wrigley Field

CHICAGO -- Former Gov. James Thompson, chairman of the Illinois Sports Facilities Authority, said the agency has come up with a plan to purchase and renovate Wrigley Field without using state or local tax dollars.

Thompson said on Tuesday the bid would be delivered "shortly" to Tribune Co. Cubs chairman Crane Kenney, who told the Chicago Tribune he had not received details of a revised plan.

"We are working on a proposal to present to Tribune Co. that will allow ISFA to acquire and fully restore Wrigley Field, as well as add parking and neighborhood improvements without using any public tax money, either state or local," Thompson told the Chicago Tribune.

ISFA and the Tribune Co. have been in negotiations regarding the sale of Wrigley Field, but many state lawmakers have been reluctant to spend tax dollars to aid a private business.

In the revised plan, Thompson said financing would be obtained in the private sector and there would be no issuance of bonds by the state. Team lease payments and the sale of partial naming rights would cover the cost of purchasing the ballpark, Thompson said. He did not say how ISFA would pay for the proposed renovation.

New Tribune Co. chairman Sam Zell announced more than a year ago that he planned on selling the Cubs and Wrigley Field, but the team sale has stalled because of the stadium negotiations. On April 17, Zell said he was going to release the ballclub's financial books to Major League Baseball-approved bidders within 10 days or so. However, that is still on hold.

Cubs Grade So Far

Overall B+
The offense is kicking in gear, mostly due to the Cubs being patient at the plate. The pitching has been very good with a few bumps in the road. Defense has been good, it should be improved upon Soriano returning from the DL when the Cubs can put Theriot on the bench and start Cedeno at shortstop.

Lee Elia 25 Years later

“We've got all these so-called (expletive) fans that come out here and say they're (expletive) Cubs fans that are supposed to be behind you ripping every (expletive) thing you do,” Elia said.

“I'll tell you one (expletive) thing. I hope we get (expletive) hotter than (expletive) just to stuff it up them 3,000 (expletive) people that show up every (expletive) day. Because if they're the real Chicago (expletive) fans, they can kiss my (expletive rear end) right downtown and – PRINT IT!”

Elia went on to describe the fans as “nickel-and-dime people,” called Wrigley Field “a playground for the (expletives) and said, “Rip those country (expletives) like they rip the players!”

-Lee Elia after the Cubs lost 4-3 to the Padres on a Lee Smith wild pitch.

So 25 years after this hilarious outburst by Elia he will be back in Chicago for the week. Attending the Cubs/Brewers.. Seems he doesnt mind Cub fans now :P He will also appear on Chicago Tribune Live this evening. That can be seen on Comcast SportsNet Chicago.

10,000 wins and counting

The Cubs were the second MLB team to reach the 10,000 win plateau. The SF Giants being the first team to reach 10,000 wins. The Phillies reached the 10,000 losses mark last season. The Cubs have put a 10,000 win "W" flag that was used at Wrigley field on top of the scoreboard on auction at cubs.com

Are the Cubs better off without Soriano??

Well considering the offensive outbursts the Cubs have suddenly found early this season some fans have asked me about that possibility. Well my answer is NO, we are not better off without Soriano, he just needs to be used better in the lineup when he is due to return on Thursday. NO MORE LEADOFF!!!! Reed Johnson has proven to all of us Cub fans that he can leadoff. While Theriot is not necessarily the answer in the 2 spot. I think that Fukudome should be in the 2 spot in the order. Think of it this way it will be the complete opposite of what the Cubs have been known for. The Cubs have always been known for free swinging strikeout batters with power, sounds like Soriano. Theres nothing wrong with him being like that, he just needs to be utilized better. Lou is a good, smart baseball man. He will figure it out eventually if not right after Soriano comes back.
